Space Agency Campaign

We were given the brief from college to create a Branding and Advertising campaign for a Space Agency, and we had to choose from Mexico, Iceland, United Kingdom, South Africa and Sri Lanka. I chose Iceland due to their rich heritage and beautiful landscapes. We needed to create a logo, name, and two pieces of graphic design pieces. I went for Posters and Product Design, but ended with extra time so created a third, an Animation.

Brand Book

Icelandic Plass is the name of the Space Agency I have created which is from Iceland. Their mission is to be the first organisation in the world to successfully send people to Mars. This campaign is announcing their launch to Mars for January 12 2025, as this is the next time the Mars Approach occurs, when Mars is as close to Earth as it can be, which only occurs every 26 months.

The logo I created represents Iceland, and its people. It consists of the Icelandic flag colours, and the Gyrfalcon which is the national animal of Iceland.

Icelandic Plass translates to Icelandic Space which is a short and unique name for a space agency who are representing Iceland, rather than just “Iceland Space Agency”. The word “Plass” comes directly from the Icelandic language.

Due to the logo being hard to see on a dark background, a fill is applied to allow maximum readability from afar.

This typeface is called Viking Hell. It is what is used in the logo. It links to the history of Iceland with the Vikings and their traditional lettering. It also is easy to read and has square letters which allows for clearer reading when read from afar.

Series of Posters

The posters is the first thing I worked on after the brand book and logo. It was important to get the logo completed as this meant I could apply it to the campaign materials.

These are some sketches of my poster ideas. I created 3 posters, so I combined them all to create one large image when they are together. This is using the Marvel movie posters as inspiration. These posters are individual posters, but when put next to each other, they create a larger image, and I love this unique style for a series of posters.

I created my posters on Illustrator. I put together 3 artboards on one file and used this as a guide. I have placed Earth on the left side of the posters and Mars on the right. This is because people read from left to right, so this is saying Earth is behind us and we are moving toward Mars. As well as the smoke and direction of the rocket implying this.

Each poster makes sense on its own. "Kanna" is the word for Explore in Icelandic. This is on every poster to ensure everyone knows what the poster is about without seeing all three together. The date of the launch is also on every poster so people can put it in their calendar and watch it live.

Product Design

Product design is one of my favourite areas of Graphic design, and I love to make designs for clothing and products that people will buy or wear.

I sketched out a few ideas of what I want on the t shirt. These are a couple. I wanted to have a rocket flying through the northern lights, however this was proving complicated so I went for the striped design, inspired by the repeating pattern of Louis Vuitton.

These designs are part of a range of items that are for the general public to buy, and money towards this goes to the research into getting people onto Mars. I created the pattern on Photoshop for the t shirt, then applied this onto a mock up of a trainer. These are both a matching pair.

I also created a range of pieces for the uniform that the employees will wear. These are in the bright Icelandic Blue colour, and white with some red. There is a cap, a polo shirt, and some passes that all visitors and staff would wear. These help to create unity in the team and encourage team work. With the passes, I used an inverted design for the visitor and staff one, as well as thinking of the different information needed for each.

Animation

I initially was not going to create an animation as the brief asked for 2 graphic design pieces. I ended up completing these 2 early, and with the extra time I created an Animation.

The animation is using a trend that was on Instagram for the new year of 2023. People were using the song Run Boy Run to create a fast paced video of their year of 2022. I wanted to create this, and give a twist to the campaign. The animation is in the perspective of the Space Agency itself, and the people who created it.

I was very happy with the animation. I used many different websites to obtain the images, and then I used After Effects to edit the duration of each image to change in beat with the music. I had experience editing videos and clips together through creating content for my business on TikTok, and I really enjoy doing that.
